Communications Director

James Fisher is a natural storyteller. Whether it’s a crafting a press release for a small business, posting on social media from an event, publishing a feature in a local publication or writing lyrics to one of his songs, James loves to tantalize and ignite interest through the written word. In today’s world of information overload, it is imperative to quickly and eloquently state the message. The lines between people’s work and personal lives have been blurred by social media, creating distrust for the consumer and a challenge for the marketer. Harnessing the power of social media requires attention to the constant changes in process and protocol that each platform makes on a regular basis. James knows how social media works, and has led digital sales and marketing teams at the Asheville Citizen-Times and Mountain Xpress, an alternative media company in Asheville, NC. Extensive ad sales and management experience, combined with a portfolio of published work gives James a unique perspective from different sides of the media world. Crooked Tree Creative enables James to use that experience to help clients meet their goals and achieve success.

Prior to joining Crooked Tree Creative, James managed the Food and Entertainment sales team at the Asheville Citizen-Times, winning Sales Manager of the Year and MVP of the Year in 2014. James was selected to the Gannett Leadership 5.0 program in 2013, presenting a digital project to Facebook and Yahoo executives. During his time at Mountain Xpress, James rose from Advertising Sales Rep to Director of Advertising/ Business Development, forming multiple partnerships along the way. Xpress was active in the digital world early on, and was at the vanguard of social media use, giving James a headstart in the digital world.

Originally from Washington, DC, James is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park with a BA in Government and Politics. He is active in the community, serving as a youth sports coach and longtime musical performer, producer and promoter.

James has served on the LEAF Community Arts Board of Directors since 2010, with terms as Treasurer, Vice President, President, and Chair.
